Informative for Every Coloradoan, Learn Winter Safety Tips at This Free Avalanche Awareness Program!

Before you travel in to the backcountry to have the time of your life skiing or split boarding, the vital question is: what do you know about avalanches? Whether you ski, snowshoe, snowboard, or snowmobile, recognition of avalanche danger is an essential and potentially lifesaving skill. Join the Colorado Springs community for Know Before You Go: Avalanche Awareness on January 15th!

Know Before You Go is a free avalanche awareness program involving little science, no warnings to stay out of the mountains, and no formulas to memorize. In one hour, you will see the destructive power of avalanches, understand when and why they happen, and how you can have fun in the mountains and avoid avalanches. This will be the best place to ask all of the questions you might have.

Pete Lardy, American Mountain Guides Association Guide and founder/owner of Pikes Peak Alpine School, will be at Mountain Chalet to guide you through all things avalanche! Pete has climbed in the Himalaya, Andes, Alaska Range, Cascades, and the Rockies since 1997 and enjoys sharing his experience and knowledge with other climbers around the world. For Pete, the life of climbing fosters lasting friendships like no other.

Know Before You Go is sponsored by Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The mission of the CAIC is to provide avalanche information, education and promote research for the protection of life, property and the enhancement of the state’s economy. These are the folks who produce the weather and backcountry avalanche forecasts.

No matter your relationship to the snow, as a Colorado Springs Resident, it’s important to understand how avalanches work, and how their damage can be assessed and avoided. So, don’t miss this free educational seminar on Wednesday, January 15th at Mountain Chalet! For more information, visit
